Modern hockey originated in the UnitedKingdom in the early 19th century, and became a formal competition for thefirst time in the London Olympics in 1908. It became a fixed competition in1928, and women's events were added in 1980.

In the 30 years since the 1920s, India hasmonopolized almost all world championships and won a total of six Olympic goldmedals from 1928 to 1956. In the history of Indian hockey, there have been atotal of five Barbier Singh. The first Singh led the Indian team to defeat theNetherlands 6-1 and won the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games men's gold medal.
